What is a Fertility Counsellor?

Many clinicians enter the field of fertility counselling as the result of their own infertility or reproductive loss: Personal experience is NOT clinical training.

Mental health Professionals with a masters or doctoral degree from an accredited university in the appropriate field of study: psychology, psychiatry, social work, mental health counsellor, etc. AND accompanying current licensure.

Specific Qualifications of a “fertility counsellor” (ASRM, 2021)

  1. Knowledge of medical, legal & psychological aspects of fertility.
  2. Psychological testing proficiency in donor-assisted reproduction and gestational surrogacy.
  3. Post licensure clinical experience in fertility counselling & evaluations (with supervision)
  4. Continuing education
